Things I’ve discovered filming weddings with my other (better) half

BTS of Lauren

Filming weddings is a unique experience, one that requires a combination of technical skill, creativity, and the ability to blend seamlessly into the most emotional moments of people’s lives. But for me, filming weddings alongside my partner, Lauren, has added an even deeper layer to the work. Together, we've built a small team that balances our strengths, communicates in unspoken ways, and celebrates each couple's love with every shot we take. Here’s a look into what it’s really like to work together on capturing weddings as a couple—and why it’s a perfect fit for us.

Building on Shared Passions

Lauren and I both have a love for storytelling and creative visuals, so when the opportunity came to start filming weddings, we jumped in together. We each have our own roles within our team; Lauren often takes the lead with the close-ups and intimate shots, capturing the smaller, more tender details. She has this incredible knack for catching fleeting expressions, a handhold, a glance. I focus more on the wide shots and movement, bringing in those cinematic sweeps and transitions that capture the full ambiance of the day.

What’s been truly amazing is that over time, we’ve developed a rhythm that allows us to know what the other is doing without needing to discuss it. She’ll catch my eye during a ceremony and nod, letting me know she’s got the shot, or I’ll know she’s perfectly positioned to capture a certain moment before it even happens. This synchrony means that we can capture each wedding from multiple angles, bringing a layered depth to the final product.

Celebrating Each Other’s Growth

Working side by side with Lauren has also been an incredible opportunity for us to grow as individuals and as a couple. Filming weddings has improved our communication, teaching us to give feedback in real time and adapt when things don’t go as planned. We’ve learned so much from each other about everything from editing techniques to how we handle pressure.

Lauren has shown me the importance of capturing the human element in each wedding—the little moments, the emotions, the laughter. I bring a technical focus, from framing to lighting, but Lauren reminds me to capture the moments that will mean the most to the couple. Together, we create something neither of us could have done alone.

Capturing Love While Living It

Filming weddings with Lauren means that every project is a little celebration of our own relationship, too. We get to be a part of one of the happiest days of someone else’s life, and each wedding is a reminder of our own journey together. Seeing other couples so in love only reinforces our own bond and reminds us of what we have as a team.

Working together to create something beautiful for others has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Every wedding we film feels like another chapter in our story, both personally and professionally. Lauren and I know that our bond makes our work stronger, and together, we create memories that couples will cherish for a lifetime.

Each wedding is a love story, and it’s our honor to tell it—with every angle, every close-up, and every candid moment, we’re capturing love while living our own.

The Unique Challenges of Filming as a Couple

Of course, filming weddings together comes with its challenges. Weddings are often chaotic, high-stakes environments, and stress is just a part of the job. There have been times when, due to tight schedules or unexpected changes, one of us feels stressed or rushed. But instead of letting the tension get to us, we’ve learned to rely on each other’s calmness in those moments. When one of us is feeling the pressure, the other steps in to lighten the load or offer reassurance.

Another unique aspect of filming weddings as a couple is knowing when to step back from the role of a partner and into the role of a professional. It’s essential to keep the focus on the couple we’re there to capture, and there’s a fine line between supporting each other and staying invisible. Over time, we've become skilled at setting aside our personal relationship in those moments, putting the wedding first, and then sharing our thoughts afterward.

Adding a Personal Touch to Each Wedding

One of the best parts of working with Lauren is that we each bring something different to the storytelling process. Lauren is wonderful at getting couples to feel comfortable in front of the camera, creating a sense of intimacy that really shows in her shots. When the bride and groom are nervous, she can make them laugh, bringing out natural expressions that make the video and photographs feel authentic and unposed, candid.

Our shared goal is to tell each couple’s unique story, and as a couple ourselves, we can bring an added layer of understanding to the process. We know what it’s like to be in love and to share a special day, so we put our hearts into capturing each moment, down to the smallest details that the couple might not notice on the day. Working together, we capture a fuller picture of the event, providing multiple perspectives that contribute to a richer final video.
